Dental Sleep Medicine

Dental Sleep Medicine is an emerging field within dentistry that focuses on diagnosing, managing, and treating sleep disorders with a specific emphasis on the oral and maxillofacial systems. This specialty has gained prominence due to its integral role in addressing conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and snoring, which have significant implications for overall health and quality of life. By utilizing oral appliances and collaborating with other healthcare professionals, dental sleep medicine aims to improve sleep quality and enhance patient well-being.

One of the primary treatment modalities in dental sleep medicine is the use of oral appliances, also known as mandibular advancement devices (MADs). These devices are designed to reposition the lower jaw and tongue to keep the airway open during sleep. Oral appliances are particularly effective for patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea and those who are unable or unwilling to use continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. The process of fitting an oral appliance involves taking precise impressions of the patient’s teeth and constructing a customized device. Regular follow-up appointments are necessary to ensure the appliance fits correctly, is comfortable, and effectively manages the patient’s sleep disorder. Adjustments may be made based on patient feedback and ongoing assessments.
