Hospitalized patients with severe mental disorders are at high risk of preventable oral damage. Dental care in psychiatric hospitals is commonly reactive and limited to emergencies, contributing to pain, behavioral instability, and reduced quality of life. This narrative paper presents a harm-prevention approach implemented in a high-specialty mental health hospital in Mexico. Oral health is often neglected in psychiatric care. Preventive dental intervention reduces avoidable damage, supports patient stability, and aligns with ethical standards of care.
Conclusion:
Harm-prevention–based dental care is a necessary model for psychiatric hospitals.
