Title: Personalized periodontics

Abstract

The advent of personalized periodontics offers a stimulating move towards a medical model of disease management, namely identifying the individual as the central component. Through defining lifestyle, behavioral, and genetic factors, and how these interact at the individual level to modify the clinical manifestation of the periodontal diseases, will become an integral part of everyday clinical practice. Personalization of oral care for managing oral infectious diseases, such as periodontitis, is currently more predictable through the diagnostics and preventive strategies.

The audience take away from presentation:

  • As the implementation of precision periodontics requires the accurate analysis of vast amount of information, constructing a database of genetic information, biomarkers, and environmental factors that may be related to the disease, and illustration of the extent of association, the foundation for precision periodontics need to be laid and developed.
  • The accuracy of the database can also be increased by applying deep learning and artificial intelligence [AI] which help increase accuracy in the analysis of the vast amount of information.
  • The social modelling aspect of periodontal disease should not be ignored and the development of patient self-testing methods should be seriously measured as well.
  • Personalized periodontics is certainly becoming a reality and a considerable advancement in oral health care due to advances in diagnostics, treatment modalities and patient-centered care.
  • Personalized periodontics represents a promising path for enhancing oral health outcomes made-to-order to individual patient needs.
