Abstract
Periodontal management procedures has evolved with use of growth factors, regenerative techniques, various flap design modifications and dental implants with ridge augmentation that make speciality has new heights. Knowledge of periodontal diagnosis and treatment is usually limited to undergraduate level and mostly private practices deal only with chief complaints. General dental practitioners usually treat periodontal patients for years on their own clinics, perform repetitive sessions of soft tissue management, instead of referring them to a periodontal specialist. Also, most of periodontal disease symptoms are noticed at the later stages, at which periods the general dentists refer them to periodontists. Such patients may not get benefit, since their periodontium become compromised & deteriorated. In addition, most of signs of advanced periodontal disease destructions (such as evident probing pocket depths without notable overlaying gingival tissue inflammation, some teeth migrations and some radiographic signs) need careful examination, education and training in order to be discovered and to refer patients in suitable times without delay. Thus, need of hour from general dental practitioners is to become able to recognize periodontal disease early, examine periodontium routinely and basically as mandatory to all teeth and refer cases to specialist in suitable times for different diseased stages, so that services rendered by periodontist will be more effective and beneļ¬cial to patients. Therefore, more continuing education programs on periodontal disease progression, its consequences and treatment outcomes at various stages of disease should be conducted, so as to positively change referral patterns done by general dentists. In conclusion, referrals to periodontists may not be based on uniform standards. Some general dentists may not aware when to refer certain cases and considerable variations existed among them. They should be aware of importance of periodontal treatment without delay and should be encouraged to receive some arranged protocols for periodontal therapy that integrate important nonsurgical periodontal techniques.
